John C. Piper of Reynolds township, for forty years a resident of Lee County, met a violent death at his home Friday evening. Mr. Piper had been to Steward and reached home at dark. He tied his horse in his stall but in attempting to leave the barn was pushed under another horse by the one he had tied. The horses were biting and pushing one another and when Mr. Piper fell, the horse trampled upon him. Mr. Piper's son heard the disturbance and got his father from under the horse. It was found that the old gentleman was badly injured and Dr. Gardner, of Steward, was summoned. Mr. Piper died before the physician arrived. His skull was crushed and his left side was broken in over his heart. Mr. Pier has been a prominent man in Reynolds and was highly esteemed. Although 75 years of age, he was very active, and during the last few years, has been an enthusiastic bicycle rider. Nearly every section of Lee County has seen Mr. Piper on his wheel, and two years ago he made an extended trip through Dakota and Kansas a wheel. The deceased had held many offices of trust during his residence in Lee County, having been supervisor, assessor, collector and town clerk. He leaves a wife, and six sons and daughters.1
