     Dr. Thomas Mackaness Ludlow Chrystie was born on 1 November 1841 in New Windsor, Orange, New York, USA. He was baptized at Saint George's PE Church, Newburgh, New York, USA, by the Reverend John Brown, his mother's uncle.2 He married Julia Stanton Ross, daughter of Edward Coke Ross and Catharine Van Dyke Berier, on 23 March 1871 at St. Georges PE Church, Fort Hamilton Village in New Utrecht, New York, New York, USA.2 Dr. Thomas Mackaness Ludlow Chrystie died on 19 May 1914 at The Crag in Rye, Westchester, New York, USA, the home of his son Ludlow, at age 72.2 He was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in New Windsor, Orange, New York, USA.3
     As a teenager, he was a Captain’s Clerk on the USS Caledonia in the U. S. Paraguay Expedition, 1858 – 1859. In 1863 he earned a Master of Arts from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut.
He served in the Civil War with the Cavalry Corps Hospital, Army of the Potomac, and was present at the siege and capture of Mobile as an acting Ensign, U. S. Navy on the staff of Admiral Farragut and Admiral Thatcher of the West Coast Blocking Squadron from 1864 to 1865.
In 1867, he graduated as a Medical Doctor from Columbia University Bellevue Hospital. He worked in the then new Orthopedic Dispensary and hospital as Assistant Surgeon and Surgeon from 1867 to 1876. He later served as Trustee of the institution.2 For many years he owned a private hospital at 206 West 46th Street, New York City. His son Ludlow and daughters Katie and Fanny met their spouses there.
He was a member of the New York Society of the Cincinnati, following his great-grandfather, Major James Chrystie.2
