Robert Donnell (The Second)
M, #435, b. circa 1728, d. 1816
Robert Donnell (The Second) was born circa 1728 in Ulster, Ireland.1 He married Mary Jane Jackson. Robert Donnell (The Second) died in 1816.1
He came to North Carolina from York County, Pennsylvania in 1771. From Rankin:
I have not yet found a connection for Robert the Second (435) or James Sr to William McDonnell (393) so it does not appear that we are related. It is very possible that the Donnells that arrived later were the Irish O'Donnells or that MacDonnells who were for several generations in Ireland adopted the "Mc" or the "O' while in Ireland.
In fact, some genealogists have linked Robert the Second to an O’Donnell family in Ireland.
Some of Robert the Second’s descendants did end up in the vicinity of Austin, Texas so I have included that lineage here.2
He came to North Carolina from York County, Pennsylvania in 1771. From Rankin:
“In 1790 the Donnell families had a great reunion, and one of the old men laughingly asked, "What do you suppose has become of the 'O' we cast overboard at sea, by this time?" This would indicate that they all came overseas together, and that the name was O'Donnell in Ireland.”

William S Donnell Sr was known by his family and friends as Captain Billy.3 From a eulogy of Robert Donnell
William Donnell was one of that noble patriot band, who under General Green, at Guilford courthouse in 1781, fought that memorable battle, which so effectually checked the desolating career of Lord Cornwallis. His wife, Mary Bell, was the daughter of Samuel Bell
...In October 1789 [they] started for the Cumberland country, as Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky expecting to join an emigrating party, which it seems was to rendezvous near or at Abington, Va. But being too late to effect this object, they remained in the vicinity of Abington until the following October, when they joined another party, and proceeded to Sumner county, Tennessee. But owing to the hostilities of the Indians, they spent the first year after their arrival, in Captain Bell's Fort, situated about one mile from Smith's Fort, afterward called Hendersonville, on Drake's creek, some 7 or 8 miles from Nashville, on the North side of Cumberland river. Sometime in the next year, (1792) they settled on Spring creek, in the adjoining county of Wilson, not many miles from where Lebanon now stands.4
From the source:...In October 1789 [they] started for the Cumberland country, as Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky expecting to join an emigrating party, which it seems was to rendezvous near or at Abington, Va. But being too late to effect this object, they remained in the vicinity of Abington until the following October, when they joined another party, and proceeded to Sumner county, Tennessee. Sometime in the next year, (1792) they settled on Spring creek, in the adjoining county of Wilson, not many miles from where Lebanon now stands.4
The next settlement, it is thought, was made on the waters of Spring creek, about eight miles south from the site of Lebanon, about the year 1796, by John Foster, John Doak, David McGathey, Alexander Braden, and the Donnell families. It was known as the "Donnell Settlement," they having numerical ascendency. Indeed, there was, and is yet, an extensive relationship of this name, several members bearing the same of several given or Christian names, as William, Thomas and Robert. It was sometimes doubtful as to which individual was meant, even when addressed by the full name. To avoid the confusion prenomens, or nicknames, were conferred by common consent. Thus they had Captain Billy, Poplar Billy, Cedar Billy and Sugar Billy; Long Tommy, Short Tommy, Tiptoe Tommy, Big Robin, Little Robin, and Uncle Robin, with a number of Georges, Johns, James', Samuels, Calvins, Etc. This Family has furnished no less than seven ministers of the gospel.5
