He was a printer and published the Columbia Spy newspaper. He moved in 1843 to Carlisle, Pennsylvania where he published the Carlisle Herald. Around 1856 he left the printing business, purchased a foundry, but returned to printing after the Civil War.1
At the start of the Civil War, Erkuries Beatty enlisted in Cumberland County on 21 April 1861, helped recruit the Carlisle Fencibles, and was elected the company's 2nd Lieutenant. He mustered into federal service at Washington DC on 27 July 1861 as 2nd lieutenant of Company A, 7th Pennsylvania Reserves (36th Pennsylvania Infantry). He fought at Dranesville and the Seven Days Battles. After being wounded twice at Charles City Crossroads (aka Glendale, Frasier’s Farm, New Market Road, et al) on 30 June 1982, Beatty was sent home on surgeon's leave and placed on recruiting duty. He returned to duty and was promoted to 1st Lieutenant 1 August 1862. Following the death of James Colwell at Antietam, Beatty was promoted to Captain of the Fencibles, ranking from Sept. 17, 1862. Beatty mustered out with his company on June 16, 1864. The War Department later conferred on him the brevet commission of Major and Lieutenant Colonel for bravery and meritorious service in the field.

He was in the Battles of Palo Alto and Resaca de a Palma after which he returned to New York.1 In 1856, John Broome Cozzens and Sylvanus Thayer Cozzens were managing the Brandreth Hotel on the corner of Broadway and Canal Street, in New York City.2
He was a friend of West Point cadets U.S. Grant and William Sherman circa 1837. He was the first volunteer in New York City when the War between the United States and Mexico broke out and joined the 2nd Regiment as a suttler circa 1846. Theodore Cozzens was born on 12 November 1826 in Cornwall, Orange, New York, USA.1 He married Elizabeth Kirtland, daughter of Ambrose Kirtland and Charlotte Ellen McCarty, on 17 April 1846 in Cornwall, Orange, New York, USA.1 Theodore Cozzens died on 28 March 1873 in Paris, City of Paris, Ile-de-France, France, at age 46.1 He was buried at United States Military Academy Cemetery in West Point, New York, USA.
