The account of his final mission has been researched at Fold 3 at Ancestry.com and is summarized below:
On D-Day, June 6, 1944 during Mission Detroit, Mission #28 his CG4 Waco-type glider ... departed Ramsbury, United Kingdom, being towed by C47-A flown by pilots Lt Myers and Lt Frederick.
His co-pilot was Flight Officer Leslie A. Reynolds also of the 84th Troop Carrier Squadron. The passengers were Sgt. Raynor M. Wilson and Pvt. Lecil A Drummond, both of the 80th Anti Aircraft Battalion.
Their mission was to transport a jeep, anti-tank ammunition, and other equipment to Ste-Mère-Eglise, about 5 miles inland from Utah Beach.
In an investigation (Missing Air Crew Report #10890), the tow pilots believed Carey Brewster's glider was either "...released or shot off about 16 miles from the landing zone. This meant that the glider landed in enemy territory with few, if any, friendly troops in the vicinity."
The report also states that the landing glider struck the top of an apple tree at the landing, killing the pilot. The copilot was hospitalized and eventually returned to England with amnesia. The enlisted men were both killed in combat within 10 days of D-Day.2
His co-pilot was Flight Officer Leslie A.
