Hollis Samuel Smith died on 4 March 1980 in Somerville, New Jersey, USA, at age 85.
He attended Saint Stephens College and General Seminary (now known as Bard College) at New York, New York, USA.1 He served as a noncombatant motorcycle courier during WWI, delivering messages between units in the battle zones in Belgium, the Argonne Forest Campaign and at San Mihiel.1
Hollis Samuel Smith graduated on 26 June 1922 at The General Theological Seminary, New York City, New York, USA. He was ordained at Trinity Memorial Episcopal Church in Binghamton, New York and a month later was on a ship sailing to China.
Hollis Samuel Smith and Anne Alexandra Piper met at the Language School at Changsha University in China where they studied the Wu dialect for two years..1 After a brief honeymoon in Japan, Hollis Samuel Smith and Anne Alexandra Piperbegan their lives together as missionaries at Saint Bartholomew's Church and Mission in Changshu (Zanhzok), China.1 He preached in Chinese and there was no English including in the liturgy.
Hollis Samuel Smith was serving as a missionary when the Japanese attacked, damaging missionary facilities. His family had moved to Shanghai earlier so the children could attend the American schools. After the attacks he brought his family back to the United States on a furlough in February 1939.2 Although they had planned to go back to China, in 1940 the U. S. State Department ordered American women and children out of the country, so his wife and children decided to live in Brooklyn, and he went back to his post in China. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the Japanese cracked down on Americans.
In 1942, he was initially imprisoned in his home, then later with 1,500 others was moved to a prison camp in Shanghai. In 1943, he was part of a prisoner exchange involving 1200 Americans, 250 Canadians, and 80 Latin Americans for 1500 Japanese citizens.
After embarking the Teia Maru, the exchange was conducted in Goa where they were placed onboard the Swedish Exchange Ship Gripsholm. The trip lasted 72 days and 18,000 miles by way of Borneo, India, South Africa, and Brazil, finally landing in New Jersey.
In 1944 he became the Rector of Saint John's Episcopal Church in Somerville, New Jersey where he stayed until his retirement in 1965.3

Alexander Ross Piper Jr was born on 24 August 1909 at 7522-2nd Ave in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, New York, USA. He married Ruth Evelyn Fitch, daughter of Joseph Dionysius Fitch and Mamie Conzen, on 26 January 1935 at Christ Episcopal Church in Brooklyn, New York, USA. Alexander Ross Piper Jr died on 22 May 1978 in Ft. Myers, Florida, USA, at age 68. He was buried at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Tarrytown, Westchester, New York, USA.
Alexander Ross Piper Jr was known by his family and friends as Alec. Alec was a small but quick boy, likely too small to consider following his father to West Point, but quick enough to frequently medal in track at Union College in Schenectady, NY. Although he never graduated, he did return to Brooklyn and soon after married his backyard neighbor, Ruth Piper.1 With the help of his father-in-law, Alex joined Paine Weber as a floor trader, buying a seat on the New York Stock Exchange and later becoming a Governor of the Exchange.
He moved out of Brooklyn in the 1950s to Chappaqua, NY and with his wife was an avid horseman. They spent summers at Basin Harbor off Lake Champlain, even after the death of their youngest son "Brucey" in the lake in a scuba diving accident. They hosted their grandchildren there most summers and in Fort Myers, Florida most winters.1
