He was awarded the Bronze Star for his work associated with the Operation Torch invasion of North Africa and the D-Day Invasion of Normandy. In recognition of his work as a Chief of Special Services in France he was awarded the Medaille de la Reconnaissance Française by General de Gaulle.
After the war, he entered the Lutheran Seminary at Philadelphia from which he received his Bachelor of Divinity degree in 1949. That same year he was granted a Master of Arts degree from Middlebury College, Vermont. He was ordained on June 15, 1949 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Buffalo. Following ordination he became pastor of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Long Island, a parish he served from its inception to his retirement in 1989.
In 1979, Wagner College conferred upon him the Doctor of Divinity degree. Following his retirement, Pastor Trexler resided in Manhattan remaining active, serving as supply preacher and celebrant to several churches in the city. He celebrated his 50th anniversary in the Holy Ministry on June 15, 1999 at Grace & St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Manhattan.
Pastor Trexler served as Chaplain to the Roosevelt Fire Department, on the Board of Advisors of the Nassau County Cerebral Palsy Association and as Chaplain to the Sons of the Revolution of the State of New York. He also served on numerous synodical and national church boards, including the Board of Directors of the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia; president of the Long Island Conference of the New York Synod; the editorial board of Una Sancta magazine; the Inter-Lutheran Commission on Worship; the Joint Committee for Lutheran Unity, and chairman of the Worship Committee of the Lutheran Church in America.
