James Davidson Donnell was born on 15 February 1812 in Wilson, Tennessee, USA.2 He married Juliet Waters, daughter of Shelah Waters and Nancy Turner, on 23 August 1832 in Wilson, Tennessee, USA.2 James Davidson Donnell married Martha Ann Doak circa 1853.3 James Davidson Donnell died on 28 February 1878 in Eliasville, Young, Texas, USA, at age 66.2 He was buried at Donnell Cemetery in Young, Texas, USA.2
Davidson, with his brother William W (2600), built the first steam mill in Hickory County on the head of Turkey Creek just north of Cross Timbers, Hickory, Missouri, USA.3 He became a prosperous farmer and planter there, owning slaves, and at the time of the Civil war he and three of his sons enlisted in the Confederate Army.4 In 1841, James Davidson Donnell and Juliet Waters moved to Hickory, Missouri, USA, with their family and joined Calvin (69) and Rufus Donnell (1792), his cousins, and the sons of William Donnell, Jr (525). The State of Missouri provided extraordinary inducements for settlers including large tracts of land.1,5 John Calvin Donnell and his cousin James Davidson Donnell were leaders in their colony in Missouri.
Charles Donnell spends some effort discussing the background, but the families that came from North Carolina through Tennessee were thoroughly in support of the Confederacy.
John Calvin Donnell was killed by two members of the "Home Guard" in Missouri when he expressed his sympathy for the Confederacy. Two sons and other relatives served in the Confederate Army.6,7 Many of the Donnells served in the Confederate Army under Colonel Sterling Price. This included James Davidson Donnell, his sons, his step-soon Robert Foster, and his brother William W. (2600)
Most of what they gained in Missouri was lost because of the Civil War.3 In 1865, James Davidson Donnell moved to Hunt, Texas, USA. Davidson with his sons Bill and Tom built another mill, which they sold. They moved to Young County, Texas in May of 1876 where they built another mill on the Clear Fork of the Brazos.
