Martha Sophronia Witherspoon1
F, b. 17 January 1811, d. 15 February 1897
Martha Sophronia Witherspoon was born on 17 January 1811 in Wilson, Tennessee, USA.2 She married John Calvin Donnell, son of William Preston Donnell and Margaret Frances Foster, on 5 September 1836. The date of the separation of John Calvin from his first wife Margaret Hancock and his marriage to Martha are not clear.3 Martha Sophronia Witherspoon died on 15 February 1897 in Hickory, Missouri, USA, at age 86.2 She was buried at Dickerson-Donnell Cemetery in Cross Timbers, Hickory, Missouri, USA.2
Martha Sophronia Witherspoon was also known as Safrona. After her husband's death, and the theft of her grain by Federal Soldiers, she took five children and moved to Springfield to be closer to her brothers. After the end of the war, she returned to Hickory County.
She then traded her property for land owned by Norville Dickenson, her son-in-law, in Benton County, Missouri.
Her daughters married two of Norville's sons. Her sons married Langford daughters. This will keep genealogists who rely on genetic testing confused.4
