Lieutenant Colonel James Piper was born circa 1735 in the North of Ireland.2 He married Lucinda Long. Lieutenant Colonel James Piper died after 27 August 1776 at a Prisoner of War Ship in Long Island, New York, USA.2 He was memorialized by the Prison Ship Martyrs Monument in Brooklyn, New York.3
He immigrated circa 1750 with his father's family to Northumberland, Pennsylvania, USA.2 He lived in Bedford, Pennsylvania, USA.4 He enlisted in the First Rifles, Continental Regiment, Pennsylvania Line, and was commissioned Lieutenant-Colonel, March 13, 1776.

William Piper was born on 31 October 1735 in Ireland.2 He married Sarah McDowell, daughter of William McDowell and Mary Maxwell, on 29 December 1759.2 William Piper died on 7 January 1798 in Peters Township, Cumberland, Pennsylvania, USA, at age 62.2
On 20 July 1763, William Piper was commissioned a Captain in the Second Battalion, Pennsylvania Regiment and served under Colonel Bouquet in the campaign of 1764, and received for his service in the French and Indian Wars two tracts of land. He moved his family from Shippensburg to the larger tract of land including the mouth of Delaware Run where they built a log house on the site of the current village of Dewart.
In the 1775 account of Rev. Phillip V. Fithian, an Irish missionary, it was called "Warrior Run". The reverend preached at the site of the unfinished Warrior Run meeting house, which was burned by Indians on 28 July 1779.

...that they fled with other settlers in the big runaway of June 1778, to escape the fury of the Indians, and his improvements were probably burned, as the savages swept the valley as with the besom of destruction. It is likely that their flight continued until they reached protection among friends at Shippensburg and there remained."
